City Administration Submits Recommendations for Airport Light Rail Line to City Council
Recommendations follow extensive meetings and consultation with the community; residents have numerous additional opportunities for input
SALT LAKE CITY—After numerous meetings with residents, community stakeholders, community councils, and two open houses, the Anderson Administration has submitted its recommendations to the City Council enumerating characteristics of the proposed light rail line to Salt Lake City International Airport. The full text of the recommendations is attached to this release.
“After careful consideration and numerous meetings with the community, our administration has submitted what we believe to be the best, most far-sighted and community-oriented plan for the Airport light rail line,” said Mayor Rocky Anderson “We welcome and encourage further public comment and input during the months ahead as we move closer to bringing this crucial project to fruition.”
The Administration made its recommendation after considering information in five areas of focus: urban planning, Downtown goals, operational aspects, cost efficiencies, and community concerns. Among other recommendations, the Administration proposes a center-running track extending north along 400 West from the existing track on that street, then west to 600 West along the north side of a new or rehabilitated North Temple Viaduct, then west along the center of North Temple to the Airport, with exact alignment at the Airport to be determined by the ongoing Airport Master Plan process. The Administration also proposes numerous improvements to North Temple, including landscaping, lighting, and bicycle and pedestrian amenities, to transform the street into an identifiable, welcoming entrance into downtown Salt Lake City accessible to all forms of transportation.
The Administration’s recommendations for the Airport light rail line will be considered by the Transportation Advisory Board at its meeting on Monday, November 5 at 4 PM in Room 326 of the City and County Building, and by the Planning Commission at its meeting on Wednesday, November 14 at 5 PM in Room 326 of the City and County Building. Residents are encouraged to attend these meetings or submit written comments to the Transportation Advisory Board care of Kevin Young, Transportation Planning Engineer, at kevin.young@slcgov.com, and to the Planning Commission care of George Shaw, Planning Director, at george.shaw@slcgov.com.
